asean community

Association of Southeast Asian NationsThe Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was formed on 8th August 1967 initially comprising Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Philippines, and Thailand. As a regional interstate organization, its membership has increased to include Vietnam, Cambodia, Brunei, Myanmar, and Laos. The organization is currently made of ten countries of Southeast Asia, and its core objectives are to promote intergovernmental cooperation as well as facilitating political, economic, military, cultural, and educational integration amongst the members.

The main purpose of coming together is to accelerate social-cultural, social development, and economic intensification. The organization also facilitates guarding the regional stability and ensuring a coordinated framework for resolving differences peacefully amongst the member countries. As an intergovernmental organization, ASEAN has been part of the official observer of the United Nations across the member countries in Southeast Asia. It has already established itself as a stand for the Asian cooperation and integrations as well as collaborating with other non-member Asian countries to promote the region’s prosperity, unity, development, and sustainability.

ASEAN has also been working with other Asian countries to establish solutions towards resolving problems and disputes in the region. While the ASEAN focuses mainly on the Asia-Pacific countries, it also formed communications with other nations in various parts of the world with the aim of promoting stability and world peace. That is why the organization is highly reputed globally due to its constant effort of promoting diplomacy and goodwill among different countries, fighting biased decision making, and supporting the code of non-interference.

How ASEAN is Promoting Tourism Among its Member Countries
The tourism is one of the economic and social sectors that promote peace, unity, and development in the world. ASEAN has been promoting tourism by establishing cooperation among the Asian countries. Some of the organization’s member nations such as Vietnam are world’s most-sought after travel destinations, and through the ASEAN many visitors from different parts of the world have been flying over to Southeast Asia.

The organization has been working with the governments, especially the tourism ministries, to ensure impartial opinion and decision-making processes. The ASEAN member states institutionalized visa-free travel among the nations, which has led to the booming of the intra-ASEAN traveling. This action has formed a community of the Asian countries, enhancing the trade and business integration in the region. According to a report published by the tourism ministries of the ASEAN member states, there was approximately 33 million out of 74 million tourists from the other Southeast Asian countries that are not members of the ASEAN organization.

asean communityThe establishment of the ASEAN teamwork in the tourism sector was finalized in 1976 after the development of the Sub Committee on Tourism, which is under the organization’s Committee on Tourism and Trade. The first forum on tourism was held in Kuala Lumpur on October 1981. Later in 1986, the ASEAN established the Promotional Chapters for Tourism in Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, West Germany, Australia, New Zealand, North America, and Japan.

In ASEAN, tourism is one of the major growth economic and social sectors, which has maintained resilient despite the economic challenges that have been witnessed over the decades. With the broad range of attraction sites in the region, there were over 80 million travelers to the Southeast Asia region in 2011. This figure represents a 30% increase in relative to the 62 million tourists that visited the same region in 2007. According to the GDP statistics of the ASEAN, the tourism sector is generating approximately 4.5% of the total GDP. Apart from generating the nations’ income, the tourism ministries have employed about 10 million people, which is equivalent to 3.5 % of the total employment.

On the other hand, the ASEAN tourism has also supported over 25 million employments indirectly. Additionally, the ASEAN has contributed about 8% of the region’s capital investment. The ministers of the ASEAN tourism called for a development marketing strategy in 2012, which was aimed at representing the agreement of National Tourism Organizations of the ASEAN on the ways of marketing for the ASEAN. Through the intergovernmental organization, the member states have been reaping the fruits of prosperity, peace, stability, and the general partnership.

• Cambodia 20th

Waste Management in New Built Hotels

Waste management

Waste Management in New Built HotelsThe ASEAN member countries alone are producing whopping tons of solid waste, which amounts to about 100 million tons every year. Adding the other Southeast Asian countries, the total waste is almost 250 million. This is more than the amount of waste generated by the US, meaning there is need to address the issue as a global concern. Both the South East Asian countries and other environmental associations have established various approaches to deal with the waste management challenges.

Managing waste is a solution that is complex, and it incorporates more than 30 different industries. It includes collecting the waste, transporting, disposing of the garbage, sewage, and various waste materials. By definition, waste management is a process of processing solid waste and provides a wide variety of solutions that recycle items excluding putting the waste into the trash bins. Recycling refers to the process of making use of the materials as a resource, and very hotel in the South East Asia is currently mandated to participate in the waste management approaches. However, the process must be done in a safe and more efficient way.

Waste managementWaste management is also known as waste disposal. It is an activity and action that is needed to manage waste right from its inception to the final disposal. There are specific regulations and monitoring ways based on the legal framework that also relates to guidance and recycling the waste. The typical methods of managing wastes are divided into several categories such as reduction and reuse, recycling, feeding animals, fermentation, composting, landfills, land application, and incineration. Most of these methods have been proposed by the ASEAN member states in order to minimize the number of disposable materials.

Methods of Waste Management

Given the many methods that can be used to manage solid waste, we are going to look at the most commonly used approaches that are applicable in small, medium and large hotel businesses.

A landfill is the most common way to dispose of waste nowadays. It entails burying waste into the ground or a designated piece of land that is monitored by a municipal council. Developing countries mostly use this kind of waste management method because it is a bit cheaper, and the amount of waste generated is not enormous to deserve other sophisticated and expensive methods. However, there are processes that are applied to reduce bad odor and harm of the waste before it is thrown into the ground.

In many South East Asian countries, this method is being discouraged by the ASEAN organization due to lack of enough space. This ensures that the minimal space available for landfills do not lead to contamination of the environment by the methane gases generated by the landfills. According to environmentalists, landfills are responsible for water and air pollution that can severely bring negative effects to the environment as well as harming the lives of animals and humans.

This is also known as combustion where the waste is burned at high temperatures to convert it to gaseous and residue products. The advantage of this method is the ability to reduce the amount of waste and also decreasing the space required for a landfill. This thermal treatment of waste uses the incinerators to convert the materials into steam, heat, gas, and ash. In the South East Asia, the countries lack adequate space for creating new landfills and therefore the incineration process is being considered as the best option.

Recycling and Recovery

Recycling and RecoveryRecovery is the process of making use of already discarded items. These items are processed in order to obtain the materials and then convert them into energy or another useful form such as electricity, fuel, or heat. Recycling, on the other hand, entails conversion of waste products into new materials that prevent energy consumption of other raw materials.

Garbage Disposal

A garbage disposal is an electric unit that is used to dispose of soft food waste by grinding and flushing them down the drain. It has been one of the agendas of various environmental conservation meetings and forums all over the world. The new hotels in the Southeast Asian countries are being encouraged to use garbage disposal to dispose of their food waste products. This will reduce overloading the already limited number of landfills. Garbage disposals grind food stuff and mix with water, and then the liquid waste is flushed and directed into the sewer line through the main drain. More info on disposal mag.

Water Filtration Systems for New South Eastern Hotels

benefits of filtered water

After engaging public health experts to determine the best method of making safe water for drinking, various new South Eastern Asia hotels have been educating their partners about the benefits of filtered water. Through the ASEAN Forum, the members have created many educational guides to spread the different benefits of filtered water so that customers can stay informed, happy, healthy and environmentally-friendly lifestyles.

Municipal water has various elements that are normally removed through the filtration process. These components include arsenic, aluminum, Disinfection Byproducts, and fluoride. Arsenic is found in tap water and contains harmful compounds such as carcinogenic that is usually linked to cancer. Through filtration system, the level of arsenic is eliminated to make the water safe for drinking.

Aluminum is also found in municipal water and can cause diseases such as hyperactivity, Alzheimer’s, brain problems in children, liver disease, skin disorders, and more. However, you may not realize the effects of this metal until it is consumed in large quantities. With filtration, the metal is eliminated and thus reducing the dangerous impacts associated with it.

Disinfection byproducts (DBPs)Disinfection byproducts (DBPs) have been known to be dangerous elements that can cause different types of cancers. This is because the elements contain carcinogenic components that get their way into the water when chlorine is used to disinfect tap water or municipal water. Therefore, the hotels in the Southeast Asia have been using a filtration system to get rid of this harmful element from the drinking water.

Fluoride has been used in toothpaste products to improve oral health. However, it is also linked to a wide range of disorders when it finds a way into the body systems. For instance, health experts have pointed out that fluoride can lead to the weakening of immune system and also damaging of cellular tissues that may lead to early aging. That is why ASEAN members have been creating awareness of these risks and proposing the use of water filtration process to make water safe for drinking.

Types of Water Filtration Systems

Reverse Osmosis

Reverse osmosis (RO) is a filtration method that is recommended by medical doctors. That is why ASEAN member countries have proposed to have RO systems in the hotels and the states agreed to subsidize the prices to encourage the move. Reverse osmosis systems are different based on the procedures used for filtering water. The best systems have 5-step processes of filtering water whereby there are micron filters, carbon filters, semi-permeable membrane, and ultra-violet light.

The RO systems are of great importance because they help to remove widely held contaminants such as bacteria and many other organisms due to the presence of ultra-violet treatment step. For the small hotels, a small water faucet can be established in the sinks for providing drinking water. This is convenient for the customers as they will not need the bottled water. The hotel management can also decide to set up a system that will feed clean to the ice makers. Interestingly, RO system improves the flavor and odor of water.

Pitcher Water Filters

Pitcher Water FiltersThese are suitable for small and medium hotels because they are locally available in many stores. The pitchers are responsible for water filtration process as they use granulated charcoal that is activated to get rid of contaminants in tap water. With the water pitcher filters, you do not need to use chlorine to disinfect water and therefore reducing the amount of chlorine in the water. The water flavor is also improved at low-costs without getting rid of the essential minerals.

Distillation has been a conventional method of purifying water. It brings the water to a boiling point by turning the water into steam and then the vapor is condensed into liquid in a different chamber. It is commonly used in chemical laboratories, and therefore a good purification process to adopt in the new hotels. It is beneficial because it eliminates fluoride and the heavy metals present in tap water. Also, it kills organisms such as bacteria making the water safe for drinking.

Berkey Water Filters

The Berkey filtration process utilizes multiple media types to remove bacteria and viruses present in water. It is capable of filtering 100% organisms, lead and other metals, as well as removing chlorine up to undetectable levels. It can also be used together with the PF-2 Filter to get rid of all unwanted contaminants such as fluoride while retaining the essential minerals. Interestingly, the initial cost is lower and it is affordable to maintain when used by small hotels.

Water Conservation Facts and Tips in Hotel Kitchens

Avoid Running the Faucet Needlessly

water usage in hotel 2Even though there are large water bodies such as oceans and lakes, clean water for commercial use remains to be a scarce resource. Hotel kitchens probably will use more water compared to home kitchens, but there is always better methods to avoid wasting it while cooking, washing dishes, or cleaning. Due to the scarcity of clean water for use in the kitchens, various states are encouraging hotels and other public facilities to adopt better ways of conserving the little amount of water they have.

However, did you know that water conservation facts and tips in the hotel kitchens are not complicated or difficult to follow? We have been following the usage of water when doing different activities in the kitchen, and we came up with the following tips. So, read them and see if they are applicable to your commercial or hotel business. We grouped them based on the activities that are usually undertaken in the kitchens.

How to Conserve Water while Cooking

Avoid Running the Faucet Needlessly

Avoid Running the Faucet NeedlesslyIn the modern hotels, there are regulations that are given to the employees on how to protect the resources. It is the responsibility of every employee, especially all the workers doing in the kitchen to conserve water. One of the best ways to ensure less water is used is by turning off the faucets when they are not in use. When cooking, it is advisable to ensure you turn off the taps so that can conserve water, as well as save energy and money.

Installation of Low-Flow Faucet

Nowadays, the traditional kitchen faucets are no longer in use, especially in commercial hotels. This is because they pour a lot of water that is not necessarily required for washing foods or cleaning dishes. In addition to having a low-flow faucet, you need also to install a large bowl in the sink. Using a conventional faucet that flows at around 5 gallons per minute is more wasteful compared to using a low-flow faucet that flows at 1.5 gallons per minute according to faucet mag

Use a Large Bow to Wash Veggies and Fruits

Washing fruits and vegetables directly by the flowing water from the faucet is certainly wasteful because more water will go down the drain needlessly. Many people, even at homes, rely on the water pressure to clean the foods thoroughly. However, modern hotels are using vegetable brushes to scrub fruits and vegetables. This is a sure method of conserving water while cooking, and therefore reduce money, energy, and resource wastage.

Don’t Defrost Frozen Foods Using Water

This is a common habit when it comes to preparing frozen food. Given the many hotels all over the world, if all of them defrost food using running water from a faucet you can imagine the amount of water that will go to waste. Therefore, you can just leave the frozen food inside the fridge overnight instead of wasting water while defrosting it.

Use Little Water to Boil Food

When cooking soft foods such as potatoes and pasta, you can use some little amount of water. This will not only conserve wastage of water but also you will conserve fuel. When such food is submerged, it will be cooked well and also maintain the flavors and nutrients.

Use Water Left Over for Plants

The plants that are planted around and inside the hotels can be watered using the left over water. This is not the waste water but the water that is no longer required for making tea for instance. Instead of pouring it into the drainage, it is advisable to use it for watering the plants.

Washing Dishes

Turn off the Faucet When not Rinsing the Dishes

When doing the dishes by hand in the sink, it is advisable to use a little water to make the sponge soapy and wet. While washing the dishes, ensure that the faucet is turned off until you want to rinse several dishes at once. You can also plug the tub or sink so that the water inside the bowl does not drain down.

Use a Dishwasher

If you don’t want to waste more water while washing dishes in the sink, you can choose a dishwasher. There are energy and water-efficient models, and you will need to run it when it is already full. Washing a bunch of dishes may consume about 15 gallons while a dishwasher uses about 5 gallons of water.

Co-Working Spaces in Vietnam

healthy working environment.

healthy working environment.Given the studies that are being carried out on different aspects of life in the modern world, businesses and organizations have adequate information to determine what comprises a healthy working environment. This is well acknowledged in Vietnam by various companies including those that are in the travel sector. This has been improved through the ASEAN intergovernmental organization, which has promoted economic and social stability with the Southeast Asian countries.

Many employers in Vietnam are constantly looking for a working environment that can facilitate utmost productivity and employee comfort. Occupational Health and Safety in Work Places

Occupational Health and Safety in Work PlacesNothing feels better than employees working in relaxed and safe offices. That is why many businesses in Vietnam have been switching to modern offices that are equipped with equipment required to handle all situations. There is also highly trained staff with professional knowledge on how to maintain the offices as well as how to handle any sort of urgency pertaining to customer’s needs.

A good working environment is quite vital in making a positive attitude. If you consider a concrete and closed office, most employees find it difficult to stay focused compared to when working in a beautifully designed office with scenic views. A spacious working office should be comfortable and capable of stimulating the occupant in order to enhance satisfaction and thus offer an environment where the employees can be productive.

It is also crucial to install proper lighting while forming a workplace. This is because lighting creates a tone of the office as well as ensuring that the occupants or the employees are satisfied. While designing the lighting, it is important to ensure that there is the natural light that enters into the rooms. In most of the offices, you will find while touring Vietnam, they allow natural light even in those offices that do not have windows. You will see silver, gold, and platinum categories of offices, which provides an inspiring place to work. Such environment fuels job efficiency and satisfaction.

According to various studies done by several sociologists, it has been revealed that happy and satisfied workers will be more engaged in their job and perform better. If an employee is more comfortable in the job, there is a higher likelihood of working smarter to achieve the best quality outcome. If the workers are unhappy and disengaged, it means they are less stimulated and can have negative impacts on their performance.

If a business has a fully serviced work space that comes with well-organized management, it can assist in relieving stress, clutter, and other daily tasks that may hinder achievement of the short term goals. The tourism and travel businesses in Vietnam have been ensuring that all their offices are well equipped and managed to offer a welcoming environment that will make the staff happy while at work.
